Angels in Exile

Around 8 years ago Tom Hewitt met a guy called Billy Raftery whilst surfing. Billy was concerned about street children and interested in making a film about their plight. Billy and Tom became partners fusing the Children Rise project (the original name of the film) and Umthombo’s street experience and relationship with the kids. Angels in Exile is an extraordinary documentary directed by  Billy Raftery. The film is made in partnership with The Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project and Charlize Theron delivers the voice over. It is the story of two street children in Durban, Zuleika and Ariel and two former street children Bulelwa “Mandi” Hewitt and Thuthukani “Sosha” Dlamini. The story is a historical document of what the street children scenario used to be like in Durban and focuses on the work of Umthombo Street Children. It was filmed over a  seven year period.
